Any advice on where to start for a first time house buyer who doesn’t want to go through a realtor?

My fiance and I want to buy a small house. We are not sure where to start. Maybe we should use a realtor.. If anyone can suggest a good website, link or even a good place to look for houses in my area that would be greatly appreciated.

I have been checking on remax.com I am pretty sure they are national. Look for open houses in the area you would like to buy, they are often in your paper. I watch "My first home" on HGTV it has given me lots of helpful hints, there is also a great website for it.

You can give a realtor the price ranges you are looking for and they can help out alot. If you do not want to go through a realtor you can look for sell by owner signs or in the paper. Good luck and happy house hunting!

Two suggestions: http://www.realtor.com or http://www.remax.com they have almost the same number of listing the advantage to the remax site is you get the RE/MAX agents for your area. They typically have more experience 10+years and will be very familiar with the markets. Most agents eventually grow up to be a RE/MAX agent. Good Luck

Start with your bank by getting a pre approved loan, then ask the banker if he has any forclosed property. Introduce yourself to every banker in your area letting them know that you are pre approved & that you may be in the market for a forclosed property.
Decide which neighborhoods you like & drive around looking for vacant houses in nice sections. Stop & ask the neighbors about the house, the owner, why its vacant ect. The right nosey neighbor will give you more info than you need.
When you find the house dont be afraid to offer alot less than they are asking.( Its business so what if they are offended they may say yes) Lots of Luck. PS Ya dont need a realtor!!

    Why NOT use a REALTORĀ®?

You’ve never done this before – don’t you think you need the help of someone who knows how it works?

In most areas, it costs you nothing to have a REALTORĀ® working for you as your Buyer’s Agent.
