You have to be careful. It’s okay to deal through real estate agents, but they most often represent the seller, and look after his interests while smiling and being friendly to you.

No these other answerers are wrong! I know because I’m a landlady myself. You do NOT have to pay a realtor to find you an apartment–the landlord pays the real estate agency to find them a tenant. The potential tenant pays NOTHING except the small cost of having a credit check run ($10 or $20).
Even in New York City, where my son and his wife live–4 years ago they had to pay a broker a hefty one month’s rent to find them a good apartment, because good apartments were so extraordinarly hard to find. But even in New York City, THIS IS NO LONGER TRUE. The broker business in NYC went bust when the economic crash happened. Apartments easy to find in NYC these days because so many people lost their jobs and moved out because of the crash. Nobody in their right mind would bother to pay a broker to find them an apartment these days.
